CPDI Kenya campus Club is a one of the core programs of Career & Professional Development Institute (CPDI) which is a legal entity duly registered as per the laws of Kenya. CPDI has in its possession, a valid Government of Kenya issued registration certificate to enable it carry out its mandate.

Introduction

Generally, life to most post secondary students joining academic institutions of higher learning is a shocker! A shocker because majority of the learners are ill prepared for the dynamics of campus life. Most students visualize that once they join campus, they will be occupied with scholarly activities like attending lectures throughout the weekdays with some limited time later in the evenings or weekends to engage in assignments, research or other extracurricular activities i.e sports, societies, clubs and other associations in advancement of their careers, nourishment of their physical, social, spiritual, political nourishment etc. After all, this is the kind of schedule they were used to while in secondary school where all if not most of their time could be accounted for on some appropriate and productive activities.

Campus time utilization

It doesn’t take long for any freshman to discover that in reality, most institutions of higher learning have limited contact hours where lecturers actually engage the learners in a class set up. In most institutions, a lecture is designed to last between two to three hours a day. On an average there are five to seven lectures in a week which in some institutions could be concluded in about three days. This clearly illustrates that for most campus learners, more time is spent out rather than within the confines of the lecture halls.

As stated earlier, the free time is expected to be utilized in productive activities. Unfortunately this is not always the case. While academic institutions may have all the good intentions by developing good programs for learners on the utilizations of their free time, sometimes due to various reasons beyond their control, they may not always be able to adequately meet the demands of the learners. Among the reasons could be the huge population of learners in campus and more so in public institution, capacity issues, emerging competing priorities, among others.

After all has been said and done, what is not in dispute is the fact that a young, intelligent but idle mind is a time bomb set for destruction of not just of the individual, but even the society at large. You know what they say about the relationship of an idle mind and a devil workshop! You will agree with us that at this tender age, it is very easy to tap and manipulate the young minds in campus either negatively or positively. It is therefore is a foregone conclusion, that without a doubt, if time at campus is not well utilized, some of the learners who are our nation’s future are likely to drawn into a quagmire of infinite negative associations and bad influence that is likely to permanently alter the course of an someone who could have otherwise been a bright star not just in the family but society at large.
